Course placement is required prior to enrollment in most English and all Math classes. Coastline’s Military Program provides students admitted to our military outreach programs the opportunity to take the Coastline Math and English Placement Tests at their respective military installations. It is recommended that students schedule their placement testing (or submit proof of placement) prior to the end of their first semester of enrollment and no later than four (4) weeks prior to enrolling in a Math or English course.

Tests can be administered online or paper/pencil. Regardless of the testing option, students are required to obtain a proctor who meets the qualification requirements listed below. Coastline also accepts other documents in place of placement tests; please see the appropriate subject area below.

Request a Test

The procedures for requesting a Coastline test are as follows:

  1. Student must locate a proctor who is willing and qualified to administer an electronic or hard copy exam in a secure location. Proctors must meet the following criteria to be approved to administer a test.

    1. Be one of the following:
      • military testing official
      • educational officer
      • teacher
      • librarian
      • principal
      • Coastline College designated testing official
      • Other accommodations can be made for students deployed or in remote locations; contact our offices for other options.

    2. Cannot be a current Coastline student

    3. Cannot be a relative of the student

    4. Cannot reside at the same address as the student

  2. Student and Proctor must complete the Math and English Proctor Agreement Form (pdf) and fax, mail or scan/email to the Assessment Center location indicated on the form. When selecting a testing option, students should consider that results from paper/pencil exams may be postponed due to possible post office delays. Within 48-72 hours of Coastline's receipt of the Proctor Agreement Form, the student will receive an email confirming their submission and providing instructions to schedule an appointment with their proctor.

    1. On-line assessment - The instructions for administering the exam will be sent to the proctor via e-mail. Upon completion of the English exam, the student will receive their unofficial placement results (please see #3 below). The normal processing time for official online exam results is 24-72 hours.

    2. Paper/pencil assessment - The exam and instructions to administer the exam will be mailed to the proctor, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of the completed exam. Please note that students may experience delays in receiving their results due to possible post office delays.

  3. Students may register for English and Math courses through MyCCC only after they have received their results via email from the Coastline Military Programs Assessment Center.

Placement Test Requirements & Limitations

You may not repeat either the English or Math Placement Test if they were taken within the past year (365 days) at any of the colleges in the Coast Community College District (i.e., at Coastline, Golden West, or Orange Coast Colleges). Test results are valid for up to 2 years only.

Calculators are not allowed for the Math placement test but you will be allowed scratch paper. No notes, scratch paper or dictionaries are to be used for the English placement test. Please call (714) 241-6367 for information or clarification of your individual concerns.
